city of making.

Urbanization has transformed and improved our way of life drastically. The majority of the world’s population is located in city centers. The outward sourcing of supplies for a large population resulted in the disconnection between production and consumption.

The 'City of Making' explored the reintroduction of production inside Melbourne's CBD. The new model of the city explores and introduces urban agriculture and food manufacturing into the existing city grid with the help of new patterns and solutions that support urban growing and making.

The 'City of Making' optimizes visibility to increase exposure to food production for the average citizens by making production tasks visible, transforming the notion of 'making' into exhibited objects and activities. The incorporation of production with consumption creates a dynamic relationship and interaction between the producers and consumers.

The reintroduction of production on the city grid is examined through 3 scales: large, medium, and small. Large-scale exploration conflates different data sets to generate a new retail/production model on the city grid. Medium-scale investigates the city block 76 and its opportunities to amplify the production/consumption scenario. Small-scale exploration focuses on devices and adaptable systems that can support the inhabitation of production in consumption spaces and vice versa.
