the adaptable city.
The Adaptable City is flexible, mutable, changeable, adaptable.
The multiple crises and uncertainties of 2020 have shown in sharp relief our urgent need for a more elastic approach to city building. We tend to build inflexible carapaces to contain us and all our unused stuff: in doing so we waste our limited resources.
The Adaptable City retools the way we build and allocate space, seeking to optimize the spaces we inhabit for comfort and amenity. If we can do that, we may find we need less of it.
A parasitic, modular build system, the Adaptable City is grafted onto the existing cityscape, making best use of the built topography to afford inhabitants views, ventilation and northerly light. Public spaces form aerial laneways bridging the different agglomerations, while private storage units make up each agglomerations south facing 'backbone'.
With each agglomeration built from standardized elements, the adaptble city can be endlessly reconfigured. Far from seeking to prescribe a set future for the city, it aims to respond resiliently to the infinitely changing urban context of the future.
